El presidente del Consejo Consultivo en Mecanismo de Protección Integral de Personas Defensoras de Derechos Humanos y Periodistas de la Ciudad de México, Gerardo Albarrán, habló en la Fundación Gabo de las circunstancias en las que se está dando la violencia contra los periodistas en nuestro país.

Albarrán calificó de “imprudentes” las reacciones del presidente López Obrador frente a los ataques que recibe de un sector de la prensa, pero aclaró que querer vincular esas reacciones con los asesinatos de periodistas resulta “maniqueo”.

“Esta es una forma de pretender vincular, responsabilizar a un gobierno o a un político en particular por una serie de crímenes que vienen sucediendo en este país como en muchos más desde hace décadas”, sostuvo Albarrán, quien abordó en la conversación con la Red Ética de la fundación creada por Gabriel García Márquez para el nuevo periodismo iberoamericano, tres cuestiones fundamentales: la transparencia de los ingresos de los periodistas y los medios, la ética periodística y los asesinatos que buscan silenciar a la prensa.

En ‘Violencia contra periodistas en México: la ética como chaleco antibalas’ (https://fundaciongabo.org/es/etica-periodistica/entrevistas/violencia-contra-periodistas-en-mexico-la-etica-como-chaleco), la redaccción menciona que el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador pidió a un grupo de periodistas publicar sus ingresos económicos como una obligación ética, refiriendo que estos informaban para favorecer a ciertos sectores y no a la ciudadanía. Las declaraciones del mandatario mexicano generaron molestias, ya que coinciden con una seguidilla de ataques y asesinatos a periodistas.

Al mandatario mexicano le reclaman la falta de un verdadero plan de protección para periodistas, comentan los redactores de la Red. Y es que, con el asesinato de Jorge Camero, editor de El Informativo, en Sonora, ya iban en ese momento seis comunicadores asesinados en lo corrido de 2022. Según datos de la ONU, de 14 periodistas que fueron asesinados en América Latina y el Caribe 2021, nueve eran mexicanos.

Desde 2000, puntualiza Albarrán en la nota que citaremos aquí en extenso, “han sido asesinados 150 periodistas hasta la fecha. Eso es responsabilidad también de los gobiernos anteriores, los del PRI, del PAN y también de este gobierno”.

¿TRANSPARENTAR LOS INGRESOS?

Para Albarrán, quien ha sido defensor de audiencias en diversos medios, la responsabilidad de los homicidios contra periodistas recae sobre una clase política que ha sido “incapaz de generar políticas de Estado que contrarresten a los grupos criminales con los que muchos políticos se asocian para acallar a la prensa”.

En este sentido, relacionar las declaraciones del presidente con ataques a la prensa, así como con la seguidilla de asesinatos también recae en un aspecto ético a tener en cuenta: la narrativa, es decir, cómo informar y reconocer los sesgos. “Tendrían que estar aquí [en México] para darse cuenta de la campaña mediática, por un lado, para menoscabar la autoridad política y moral de un presidente y, por el otro, para contribuir a la polarización y malestar social por condiciones que no fueron creadas por esta administración. Otra cosa es que tampoco esta administración haya mostrado la capacidad para resolverlas”, puntualiza.

Merece la pena reflexionar sobre las declaraciones de AMLO respecto a los ingresos de los periodistas. ¿Deben los periodistas publicar el monto y origen de sus ingresos?

Albarrán de Alba, quien dirigió durante años Sala de Prensa, un sitio punto org especializado en temas de comunicación y periodismo, lo considera un despropósito. “Tendríamos que pedirle a todo el mundo que diga cuánto gana. No veo mayor diferencia en que un periodista tenga que decir cuánto gana por una cuestión de ética a que me lo diga un médico o que me lo diga un profesor. Todos cumplimos una función social e incidimos en la sociedad, pero mi salario es algo privado, personal. Hay un límite entre lo que es la información de interés público y el derecho a la privacidad”, explica.

La propuesta de AMLO va dirigida a un grupo de periodistas que suelen ser críticos con su gobierno y devengan salarios mucho mayores al promedio de los periodistas. Sin embargo, para Albarrán, el presidente mexicano confunde la figura de servidor público con la de figura pública, ya que se ha puesto a sí mismo como ejemplo de transparencia. “Una cosa es el servidor público, el que vive del erario y otras las figuras públicas que eventualmente podemos llegar a ser algunos periodistas con visibilidad. Ser figura pública no me obliga ni ética ni moral ni profesionalmente a exhibir mis ingresos. Ahí se equivoca el presidente”, resalta el periodista mexicano.

Albarrán aclara que no es antiético que los periodistas tengan buenos salarios. Por el contrario, estaría de acuerdo en que todos pudieran tener acceso a salarios dignos, teniendo en cuenta que en América Latina “existe la precarización, malas condiciones del ejercicio periodístico y una sobreexplotación por parte de los empresarios mediáticos sobre los periodistas”. Pero insiste en que la sociedad debe medir a los periodistas no por sus ingresos, sino por su conducta, por la congruencia en el ejercicio profesional y por el servicio que le prestan a la sociedad.

DERECHO A SABER QUIÉN PAGA

No obstante, existe un reclamo generalizado a la industria del periodismo sobre su independencia (o falta de ella). La desconfianza en los medios suele estar instigada por los intereses políticos o partidistas de los mismos. En este sentido, Albarrán propone que las empresas periodísticas sí deberían transparentar sus ingresos. “Las audiencias tienen derecho a saber quiénes están financiando el medio de comunicación que utilizan. Es un ejercicio de transparencia no solo financiera sino de transparencia editorial y ética. En la medida en la que un medio de comunicación transparenta sus ingresos frente a sus audiencias, genera todavía mayor confianza en ellos para saber qué están leyendo o escuchando”, explica.

De hecho, el periodista mexicano aclara que los medios de comunicación pueden fijar una posición ideológica, que se ve reflejada en la línea editorial. Sin embargo, insiste en que se debe hacer de forma transparente; es decir, deberían comunicarle a sus audiencias de dónde vienen los ingresos que reciben. “Por supuesto, el periodismo cuesta y el buen periodismo cuesta mucho dinero. Los medios tienen que encontrar las fuentes de financiamiento que permitan hacer este periodismo”, manifiesta. Además, considera que el objetivo ideal del periodismo no es hacer dinero. “Se hace dinero para financiar ese periodismo, no para ganar dinero”, anota.

El periodista mexicano señala que tanto las audiencias como los reporteros deben tener claro que determinadas organizaciones financian proyectos que están alineados a sus propósitos políticos y particulares, pero el medio de comunicación no tiene por qué casarse con esa financiadora. “Al momento de negociar tales ingresos, debe tener muy claro que su línea editorial no está sometida a los intereses de la financiadora. Los medios deben preservar su independencia profesional, lo que no significa que sean neutrales”, sostiene.

Además, explica que ser independientes no es lo mismo que ser neutrales. Aclara que el periodismo también tiene sus propósitos, pero la clave es que estos deben ser siempre transparentes para las audiencias.

ÉTICA, CHALECO ANTIBALAS

Ya había mencionado Gabriel García Márquez que la ética no puede ser una condición ocasional: ‘Siempre debe acompañar al periodismo como el zumbido al moscardón’. Por eso para Albarrán, cuestionar la calidad deontológica de los periodistas siempre será pertinente. “Ese es nuestro máximo capital y es algo que está en la línea permanentemente. Que un político o ciudadano o un empresario o cualquier actor social cuestione las motivaciones de un periodista me parece un gesto democrático”, expone.

Durante 30 años, Albarrán ha enseñado periodismo y cursos de autoprotección para hacer periodismo en las regiones más peligrosas de México. Para él, el mejor mecanismo de autoprotección que pueden tener los periodistas es la ética. Si bien no desconoce las condiciones adversas a las que se puede enfrentar un periodista, le apunta a seguir haciendo un periodismo riguroso, contrastado, verificado, responsable, empático, con perspectiva de Derechos Humanos, de género y hecho para la sociedad, no para el poder.

“No existe ni mecanismo gubernamental ni agrupamiento gremial que pueda convertirse en un chaleco antibalas que nos libre del riesgo de ser atacados por los poderes que se ven afectados por un periodismo que está hecho para la sociedad. En la medida de que ese periodismo sea rabiosamente ético, construimos un manto moral de protección en la misma sociedad”, asegura.

Pone como ejemplo que cuando asesinan a un periodista en México, quienes salen a protestar son los mismos periodistas. “Nadie de la sociedad nos acompaña, porque no encuentran en la inmensa mayoría de los medios nada que sea para ellos. Afortunadamente, en este país también desde hace décadas surgen muchos pequeños medios promovidos por nuevas generaciones de periodistas que creen en la ética y el rigor periodístico”, anota.

Albarrán enfatiza en que si algo puede funcionar como un chaleco antibalas es la ética periodística y un periodismo con enfoque social, dirigido a las ciudadanías. “Esto tiene que convertirse en ese escudo moral que la propia sociedad nos pueda ofrecer”, manifiesta.
