Reivindicando “la libertad política para criticar los desaciertos de la 4T y del Presidente sin necesidad de identificarse con una visión del mundo y una práctica profesional con la que no se coincide”, la frase ‘Todos somos Loret’ implica, más que “una defensa del periodista atacado”, “una suerte de identificación con los valores y actitudes que él defiende”, escribe Jorge Zepeda Patterson.
Para el autor de la columna Pensándolo Bien que se publicó en Milenio Diario el 15 de febrero de 2022 con el título: ‘No todos somos un #’ (https://www.milenio.com/opinion/jorge-zepeda-patterson/pensandolo-bien/no-todos-somos-un), la fórmula resulta “tan absoluta y evidentemente falsa” como lo sería el hashtag opuesto: ‘Todos somos Obrador’.
“Adscribirse a ‘Todos somos Loret’ es un acto solidario en defensa de quien está siendo víctima de un ataque que se considera injusto. El que lo enarbola tendrá razones para pensar que es mejor ciudadano uno que da un paso al frente, así sea en redes sociales, para protestar contra un abuso del poderoso. Pero las palabras pesan y están cargadas de significado. Los símbolos representan definiciones y tienen consecuencias. Y, por lo mismo, merece examinar los colores con los que nos vestimos y las consignas desde las que participamos. ‘Todos somos’ algo, lo que sea, entraña un sentido de pertenencia y, en la misma proporción, de exclusión. ¿Todos? ¿Y los demás que no son ‘todos’?”
Zepeda Patterson recuerda al joven Loret: reportero de radio con “aptitudes personales y profesionales que le permitieron avanzar en este duro oficio”. Tareas e intereses distintos no abonaron para hacerlos coincidir en los siguientes años. Pero siguió su trayectoria y difiere del tipo de comunicación que Loret está haciendo porque “en algún momento cruzó el límite de periodista para convertirse en activista político”. Y “hay una diferencia sustancial entre criticar el abuso del soberano en contra de un crítico, e identificarse con lo que sostiene este crítico”.
Un periodismo que solo ve cosas buenas en el gobierno no es periodismo sino propaganda –decían los clásicos–, “pero solo inventariar lo negativo y olvidarse del resto de la información no equivale a hacer periodismo, sino política partisana”.
“El periodista es un curador de la realidad con toda su complejidad. Abordar solo aquello que daña a un proyecto político con el que no se coincide, aumentarlo, sacarlo de contexto, añadirle adjetivos y una fuerte dosis de histrionismo constituye un discurso político. Hay parodias de Loret con Brozo en un falso Palacio Nacional que pueden ser buenas piezas de teatro político de carpa en la era digital, pero hacerlas provocan un costo en la credibilidad profesional. Palillo hacía crítica política y hacía comedia, nunca pretendió ser periodista. Tampoco juzgo a Loret, las decisiones tomadas y el derrotero asumido responderán a sus intereses y a las causas que sostiene; supongo que él considera que más importante que hacer periodismo es denunciar a un gobierno que asume dañino para el país en el que él cree.”
LA GENTE NO ES CIEGA
Para Zepeda Patterson, “el problema es que vivimos en una comunidad dividida. Si el periodismo profesional, aquel que es útil a la vida pública, supone dar cuenta de la realidad, hacerlo desde el exclusivo punto de vista de una de las partes equivale a tomar partido. Esto no significa que exista la objetividad absoluta, ni que carezcamos de convicciones políticas o de preferencias como cualquier otro ciudadano; pero en tanto que nos ostentemos como periodistas, tendríamos que hacer el esfuerzo de responder a los códigos de este oficio: dar cuenta de las distintas versiones, poner la información en contexto, verificar, informar y no adjetivar”.
“Que 60 por ciento de la sociedad apoye al Presidente significa que hay otras razones y visiones del mundo de las que informar, incluso si no coinciden con las propias. Creer que ese 60 por ciento piensa así porque está engañado o desinformado, equivale a negar la perspectiva de los otros, los que no forman parte de ‘Todos somos Loret’, como si no vivieran también su realidad. Una realidad que se forma por el conjunto de millones de personas que transcurren sus vidas en este mismo espacio geográfico, con sueños, ilusiones, frustraciones, alegrías y tristezas no menos válidos que los nuestros. La gente no es ciega ni vive engañada frente a su propia realidad, simplemente es distinta o su mirada es diferente.”
La manera en que el Presidente utilizó el espacio público, usó la información y dejó expuesto a un crítico de su gobierno, le parece reprobable al columnista, “por decir lo menos”. Días antes publicó en otro medio un largo artículo sobre el despropósito jurídico, político, ético y mediático que significa la exhibición de los supuestos ingresos de Loret. “Podría no siempre estar de acuerdo con el contenido y el tono de sus reportajes, pero no hay manera de justificar el proceder de AMLO frente al comunicador. Y más preocupante me parece el hecho de que este incidente se suma a otros que muestran un divorcio creciente entre las convicciones e ideales que ha sostenido el Presidente y una praxis diaria que se subordina a fobias y filias expresadas sin filtros. Por más que coincida con muchos de los ideales de justicia social que lo llevaron a Palacio, me resultan contraproducentes la fascinación de AMLO por el Ejército, su desdén convertido en animadversión hacia otras causas justas que no son la suya (feminismo, derechos humanos, ambientalismo, derecho a la crítica), la creencia de que sus gustos e idiosincrasias personales y el movimiento que representa la esperanza de tantos, son la misma cosa”.
“Loret creyó más conveniente aparcar el periodismo para hacer parodia política y activismo partisano. Pero, al contemplar el espectáculo de algunas mañaneras, me pregunto si AMLO no ha comenzado a hacer algo equivalente: dejar de lado al jefe de Estado que pretendía ser para convertirse en animador de una carpa política para los suyos, en pregonero de sus viejos resentimientos y sus nuevos agravios, en paciente de un diván público usado para dar salida a sus pulsiones personales. Y, en el proceso de hacerlo, está lastimando las atendibles convicciones que lo trajeron al poder o los sueños de convertirse en el presidente que uniría a los mexicanos en la construcción de un mejor país para todos.”
Y, frente a esto, “no cabe sino rehuir los hashtags todos somos Loret y todos somos Obrador y los que vengan en camino, y comenzar a pensar otra vida pública en la que quepan incluso los que no piensan igual que nosotros”, concluye Jorge Zepeda Patterson.
FALTA LA NOTA METODOLÓGICA
Para Daniel Lizárraga, el periodista que comandó el grupo de reporteros que produjo la investigación sobre la casa blanca de Peña Nieto, “el periodismo no es perfecto. Cuando la gente o los propios autores y reporteras miramos el trabajo, observamos que algo pudo hacerse mejor. Tratamos de acercarnos a los hechos hasta dónde sea posible; con nuestras técnicas, métodos, experiencia y ética. Pero siempre, o casi siempre, son acercamientos”.
En el texto que publicó el 16 de febrero de 2022 en distintas plataformas, ‘No todos somos Loret… ni tampoco ciegos’ (https://amqueretaro.com/opinion/2022/02/16/no-todos-somos-loret-ni-tampoco-ciegos-daniel-lizarraga/), Lizárraga reconoce que “la verdad tal cual es imposible”, sin embargo, “cuando hay una investigación que sacude a las audiencias, a juicio de quien escribe esta columna, hay que detenerse un momento para observar con una mirada fría cómo se hizo. Los entretelones también son útiles”.
Premiado con el Gabriel García Márquez de Periodismo, el Premio Latinoamericano Colpin y el Premio Nacional de Periodismo de México por la investigación de la casa blanca, Lizárraga ha publicado otros reportajes financiados en su momento por Mexicanos contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (MCCI), la misma onegé que patrocinó las piezas de Sembrando Vida y la fábrica de chocolates y la de las casas de José Ramón López Beltrán en Houston.
También fueron costeados por MCCI, ‘El entramado detrás de la operación de espionaje Pegasus’, historia publicada en la revista Proceso y el diario El Universal que ganó el segundo lugar del Premio Alemán de Periodismo Walter Reuter, y el reportaje ‘La negra historia de Odebrecht en México’.
Con esas credenciales, Lizárraga tiene la autoridad periodística para decir que “un reportaje de alto impacto que revela un posible conflicto de interés” entre el gobierno de AMLO y un contratista de Pemex, Baker Hughes, “debió incluir una nota metodológica que transparentara cómo los reporteros… obtuvieron la información o los datos para iniciar una investigación periodística”: cómo “supieron que José Ramón López Beltrán y su esposa Carolyn Adams vivieron en esa lujosa propiedad”.
La nota metodológica no es un asunto menor en tiempos polarizados. Si quienes están a favor de la 4T de todas maneras atacarían al reportaje cuestionando la campaña de desprestigio contra el presidente López Obrador, los reporteros estaban obligados a rendir cuentas sobre cómo llegaron al tema.
“En el reportaje, tanto en video como en texto, no aparece que el equipo periodístico haya solicitado una entrevista o una postura a Pemex, a José Ramón López Beltrán, al ejecutivo de Baker Hughes y al mismo López Obrador antes de que se difundiera el reportaje. Si cualquiera de ellos no quería hablar, así hay que dejarlo plasmado en la investigación. En su caso, buscar cómo suplir esas voces o reforzar las pruebas en su contra.”
Parece obvio, pero “en el periodismo de investigación no existe la objetividad. Desde el momento mismo en que tenemos una hipótesis y tratamos de comprobarla, no cabe la neutralidad. Lo que sí debemos tener es equilibrio, que consiste básicamente en permitir que los afectados expresen lo que quieran. El derecho de réplica, tan de moda en estos tiempos, es una un tema aparte; eso vendrá después”.
¿DE QUÉ VIVE CAROLYN ADAMS?
En redes sociales o en la radio, se ha planteado la pregunta: ¿de qué vive Carolyn Adams, la esposa de José Ramón López Beltrán? El reportaje de marras explica que ha trabajado para empresas del sector de hidrocarburos. Y mencionan que compartió un video “durante la ronda de la reforma energética en el que celebra el anuncio de la compañía Shell como ganadora de una zona de explotación petrolera”. Pero el reportaje no responde a interrogantes sobre un vínculo “que pueda comprobarse” entre Adams y Baker Hughes, si ella trabajó para esa compañía o si conoce al ejecutivo Keith L. Schilling, apunta Lizárraga.
“Ella, sin duda, es conocida entre los petroleros de Estados Unidos. Eso abre una línea de investigación que no se siguió o quizá no fue explorada hasta sus últimas consecuencias. En el texto y en el guión, no hay una prueba documental o de otras características entre Adams y la compañía contratista de Pemex.
“Construir una carrera en el periodismo cuesta años y echarla al bote de la basura puede demorarse unos minutos. El caso de Carlos Loret es un ejemplo claro de este principio entre quienes trabajamos en los medios de comunicación. El montaje del caso Florence Cassez está probado incluso ante los tribunales”. El conductor “carecía de la credibilidad suficiente para difundir un reportaje de este calado. Él ha dicho, en reiteradas ocasiones, que cometió un error. Por un momento, demos por cierto ese yerro; sin embargo, públicamente no ha podido sacudirse de encima esa imagen. La investigación fue difundida en una plataforma que sería debilitada de inmediato.”
Frente a eso, “la postura asumida por López Obrador es injustificable. La información sobre los ingresos millonarios de Loret de Mola como periodista deben estar, como el de cualquier otra persona, bajo resguardo por ley y, sin su consentimiento, jamás pueden volverse públicos. Si el presidente considera lo contrario por la trayectoria de Loret de Mola, no significa que pueda pasar por encima de la Constitución y la Ley de Datos Personales, entre otros reglamentos”.
“Las respuestas al reportaje desde el Palacio Nacional no han hecho más que enredar las cosas para el Gobierno. Pemex abrió parte de la información sobre los contratos, pero dejó algunas dudas que no fueron cuestionadas por la prensa que estaba en la conferencia mañanera de ese día.”
López Beltrán “tardó 17 días en dar la cara y, lo peor de todo, la mayor parte de su defensa sirvió para abonar la controversia sobre un posible conflicto de intereses –remata Daniel Lizárraga–. El propio López Obrador tuvo que decir, en la rueda de prensa mañanera, que su hijo cobra en la empresa de los hijos de su amigo. Como escribió hace unos días mi colega Álvaro Delgado en Sin Embargo: ‘Carajo’”.
